About & Contact

You don’t need to be perfect. You just need to sew.

The number one advice I often give new seamstresses is “to allow yourself to fail, because you will.” Trying is the only way to learn!

I have seen for over 23 years and I STILL make mistakes. I’m still a sloppy sewer. I still forget the basics.

Sometimes I identify more with “seam ripper” than “seam whisperer”.

But sewing isn’t about perfection, it’s about art, creativity, function, frugality, enjoying the process, and it’s about real LIFE.

On this blog you won’t find perfect patterns or pictures. What you will find is a collection is sewing content from my real life. From my home to yours.

Welcome!

What you should know:

  • It takes time to learn. So experiment!
  • You will get better

Hi, I’m Rachel.

I’m a self taught sewer and seamstress who has become obsessed with sewing! Sewing has so many benefits, including

  • save money by tailoring own items
  • resize clothes to fit your unique body
  • Upcycling old clothes and items to make them new again
  • Mend broken clothing and textile goods to give them longer life
  • Make homemade gifts that are inexpensive or free
  • Sew costumes and toys for your kids!

About Me

woman sitting at sewing machine with dress form

I got my first sewing machine for my birthday at age 5 or 6. It was a mini sized, kids sewing machine. Unfortunately I don’t remember what happened to that machine, but I do remember that it sparked a lifelong love of sewing!

I made my first dress at age 8, it was blue with a white lace overlay. Through the years I have experimented with clothing alterations and design, as well as sewing all kinds of household goods.

Clothing alterations remains my passion and I now sew from home for clients who need their clothing altered in almost any way.

I love to sew for my kids and family. Fun fact, most of the time I sew while babywearing!

The seam whisperer was created to share my love of sewing through tips, ideas, and free patterns.

I think sewing is so valuable as well as enjoyable, it was a somewhat lost skill that  I’m so glad is becoming popular again! Everyone should learn to sew!
