These carrots are adorable to use as Easter decorations, which is why I made them, but my kids had other plans!

For you non sewers out there, you CAN make these without sewing!

Whether you use them as play food, or as a decorative accent, you will love how fast they come together.

About This Tutorial

These fabric carrots are a great way to use up some scrap materials. You can also make them different sizes by scaling the printable pattern up or down, or by tracing your own pattern on another piece of paper.

All you need is to make a cone shape! (You can make your own cone shape, or you can use the one I used by downloading my pattern.)

The tutorial below is a sewing tutorial, but if you prefer to make these carrots without sewing, you can use hot glue on all the places you would have sewn! Just be careful when you turn the carrot inside out.

I will show you how to make two different kind of leaves for the tops of the carrot, one that is “loopy” and one that is straight. Make sure to read both directions before sewing sew you know what to do.

Also, if you are going to use these carrots as a shelf decoration and want them to have some weight to them, you can fill them either partially or entirely with rice or plastic filling beads instead of stuffing.

How To Download The Carrot Pattern

This pattern is a simple 1 page PDF that you are free to use to make as many carrots as you want. (And yes, you can sell them if you want.)

To download the pattern, sign up for my email list below and I will send you the pattern file right away.

Print it at 100% scaling if you want to make the same size of carrots I did. You can also try printing it smaller or larger to make different sized carrots!

How To Make Fabric Carrots (With “Loopy” Leaves)

Step 1. Cut Out The Fabric

Fold your fabric in half with the right sides together and lay the pattern piece on top, lining up the edge of the pattern with the fold on the fabric.

Cut out the fabric.

Then, pin down the open side of the fabric.

Sew down the edge with a 3/8ths inch seam allowance.

Trim a bit of the excess fabric off the point to remove bulk.

Step 2. Stuff The Fabric Carrot

Turn the carrot right side out and carefully use a pointed object to poke the tip out so it is crisp.

Now, stuff the carrot! I found it was best to start with a tiny piece of stuffing and poke it down into the point of the carrot, then do bits at a time and work my way up.

If you are having trouble stuffing the tip, you can use the flat side of a pen to push the stuffing down.

Step 3. Sew The Top Of The Carrot Closed

Using a needle and thread, sew a running basting stitch around the top circumference of the carrot.

Then pull the ends tight to cinch it closed, and tuck the raw edges INSIDE while you close it. Leave about a finger-tip sized hole in the middle (so don’t cinch it all the way closed) and then tie the threads and trim the ends.

Step 4. Make The Carrot Top (Leaves – loopy style)

Using your rotary cutter, cut 1/4 inch wide strips of felt that are at least 6 inches long. I cut about 5 strips.

Cutting out long strips of felt for the carrot leaves

Fold each of the strips in half, and line up all the ends. Sew through the ends with your needle and thread to fasten them together. You can also wrap the thread around the base to make it stronger.

Then use your needle and thread to sew the base of the leaves to the carrot top. I just sewed through it back and forth several times until I felt like it was secure.

Then you are done!

DIY Fabric Carrot Stuffed with loopy leaves

I like this style of carrot top. The loops add interest and playfulenss to the leaves! Super cute!

If you want to make a carrot with straight leaves, you can do the method the exact same way but with non-folded strips of felt. OR you can make them extra secure by following the instructions below:

Make A Carrot With Straight Leaves

Step 1. Cut And Sew The Felt Strips

For this leaf method, cut out several strips that are 1/4″x4″.

Before sewing your carrot “cone” together, lay the strips evenly along the top edge of the cone, avoiding the two side edges (to leave space for the seam allowance).

You can pin them if you want.

Step 2. Sew The Strips To the Carrot

Now, carefully sew a line along the edge of the top of the carrot to attach the strips to it.

Then you will continue on as normal. Fold the fabric in half with the right sides together, and sew down the side.

Then flip it right side out, and the sewn on felt strips will look like this:

Then stuff the carrot, and sew a basting stitch around the top to cinch it tight.

The leaves on this carrot are much more secure, but I personally like the look of the loopy ones better. It’s up to you!

Lastly, you can tie some string around the leaves if you want to add a bow! Super cute!

And this completes the fabric carrot tutorial! They look best in a set, so make a few more! maybe make them different sizes.
