Whether you call them sewing cards, lacing cards, or threading cards, the idea is the same, to practice the motions of sewing in a safe and fun way for kids.
These free printable Valentines Day themed sewing cards are a great way to help kids hone in their fine motor skills and learn valuable pre-sewing skills too.

About The Sewing Cards
These cards are great for ages 3-9 or so. But because of the long string, make sure your small child is supervised while using the cards.
You can use ribbon or yarn with these sewing cards if you don’t have a lace. To make it easier to thread the ribbon or string, tape the end of it like in the image below.
Supplies & Materials Needed
- Printed Sewing cards (See my printing recommendations below)
- Scissors
- Standard handheld office hole punch (1/4 inch hole size)
- Yarn or ribbon with the ends taped about 1-2 inches (or you can use a real shoelace!)
How To Download & Print Your Cards
To download the free sewing cards, simply enter your email into the box below and I will send the file to your email inbox. The file is a 2 page PDF, in full color.
Your sewing cards need to be sturdy if you want to be able to reuse them. If you only intend to use them once, you can print them on regular copy paper or cardstock.
If you want to re-use your cards again and again, I recommend you print them on cardstock and laminate them, or at least glue the cardstock to a thicker craft paper board to stiffen it up.
You can also take the file to a print shop, and have them print and laminate it for you.
Whatever you use, make sure the material is sturdy, yet thin enough to punch holes through.
When printing the cards at home, I recommend selecting the “fit to printable area” option, just to make sure nothing gets cut off.
Valentine’s Day Sewing Card Instructions
These cards come with two pages, a “Level 1” page and a “Level 2” page.
The level one page is intended to be threaded as normal, however the child wants to thread it.
The two designs on page two are a little bit special. The word “Love” can be threaded with backstitches to “embroider” each letter (you’ll need an extra long string).
The orange/yellow/pink hearts on the bottom create a little paper purse when folded and stitched. To make the purse, follow the instructions below!
How To Sew The Paper Heart Purse
Laminate the cards, then cut out the heart shapes.
Using a handheld hole punch, punch out the holes on the white circles around the card. (I used a heart hole punch because I can’t seem to find my normal one…)
After punching out the holes, fold the hearts in half on the dotted line.
Sew up the side of the hearts by sewing through the first hole, tying a knot, then sewing through the remaining three holes however you like.
Tie the string around itself to tie another knot.
To make the purse handles, get another long piece of string and tie one end of it to one of the holes on top of the heart. Then tie the other end of the string to the other hole on the same heart.
Then repeat with the other side to make a second handle.
Now you have a little sewn heart “purse” that you can open up and put surprises inside!
My toddler loved it!
