Download and make your own adorable lacing cards with this spring themed printable!
We love lacing cards around here, and making all sorts of themed ones has been on my to do list lately!
Sewing cards (also known as lacing/threading cards) are a great activity for kids ages 3 and up to practice their fine motor skills.

About The Sewing Cards
These cards are great for ages 3-9 or so. But because of the long string, make sure your small child is supervised while using the cards.
These spring lacing cards have four different image designs:
- A bird
- A Butterfly
- A Lady Bug
- A Daisy
You can use ribbon or yarn with these sewing cards if you don’t have a lace. To make it easier to thread the ribbon or string, tape the end of it like in the image below.
Supplies & Materials Needed
- Printed Sewing cards (See my printing recommendations below)
- Scissors
- Standard handheld office hole punch (1/4 inch hole size)
- Yarn or ribbon with the ends taped about 1-2 inches (or you can use a real shoelace!)
How To Download & Print Your Cards
To download the free sewing cards, simply enter your email into the box below (Or click here) and I will send the file to your email inbox. The file is a 2 page PDF, in full color.
To make sure your cards are reusable, they need to be made on sturdy paper. Here are some options:
- Print them on cardstock and laminate them
- Print them on regular paper and glue them to a thicker craft cardboard
- Take the file to a print shop so they can laminate it for you
Whatever you use, make sure the material is sturdy, yet thin enough to punch holes through.
When printing the cards at home, I recommend selecting the “fit to printable area” option, just to make sure nothing gets cut off.
Spring Sewing Card Instructions
First, you need to print and laminate the cards.
Then, use a hole punch to punch holes in each white space on the design.
(you can punch more holes around the bird if you want to.)
The holes fit a standard 1/4 inch hold puncher.
After the card is punched, let your child lace it with a string!
The two designs on “Level 2” are special.
To use the butterfly, teach your child how to sew an “X” shape over the center of the butterfly using the four holes.
To make the bird, stitch up the back of the bird, then up through the wing.
Then stitch down through the other wing hole, and down through the other hole on the bird.
Then you can tie the strings in a knot to keep it together. You can trim the strings or just untie them and do it again!
Conclusion
I hope you and your kids enjoy these fun spring themed lacing cards. What a fun way to teach kids pre sewing skills such as threading a hole, and manipulating thread.
