This heart shaped felt bookmark is a GREAT sewing project for beginning sewers! You can even customize it with embroidery. Hand or Machine sewn!
The last fabric bookmarks I made were a classic rectangle bookmark shape, and while easy, this tutorial blows them out of the water for simplicity and easiness!
These heart bookmarks are a lovely quick project that older kids can learn to sew themselves! You can customize the felt to make them even cuter. They make a good item for kids craft fairs or for sale because they are CHEAP, useful, and colorful!

Supplies Needed
- Craft Felt (thin acrylic felt sheets are great for this project, rather than thick felt, since it will be in a book.)
- Matching Thread
- A paper to make a pattern with
- Sewing pins or clips
How To Make A Heart Corner Bookmark
Step 1. Make Your Pattern
Cut off the corner from a piece of paper, about the size you want your bookmark to be. I did about 3 inches.
Notice the 90 degree angle of the corner, you want to keep this angle very square so that it will fit over the corner of your book.

Next fold the corner in half, so the bottom edge meets the left edge.

Now you are going to cut your heart shape. The fold of the paper will be the center of the heart when you unfold it.
You can draw half a heart shape coming out from the fold. Use the open edge of the paper to be the outside edges of the heart, so you will only need to draw and cut the top curved part of the heart.

Then open up the paper to see your heart. Notice the original corner is still square.

Step 2. Cut Out The Felt
Using your pattern, trace a heart onto the felt. You can utilize the corners of the felt sheet to make it faster. I used a disappearing ink marker.

Then cut out your two hearts.

Now, if you want to embroider or otherwise decorate your heart, this is the time! Once they are sewn together, you won’t be able to sew them as easily.
Step 3. Sew The Hearts Together
Stack the two hearts on top of each other and pin them together.

Now you will sew the two hearts together along the corner edges. You want to stay as close to the edge as you can for this, and keep your lines very straight.
You can hand sew it with a straight stitch, or you can sew over the edges with a blanket stitch, or you can machine sew a top stitch.
I used my sewing machine to go fast.

Then you are done! Now you can slide the bookmark over your pages to save your spot. It looks so cute!

This is a great gift for anyone who LOVES reading!
