Want to learn what the Bible says about sewing, fabrics, embrodery and more? Here is my list of top verses!
The Bible is full of wisdom and stories about all sorts of topics, and I was curious what it said about sewing!
Not surprisingly, there isn’t a huge amount about sewing written in the bible, but we do have a handful of verses that mention it and are very interesting.
In this post I have rounded up Bible verses (in the KJV) that mention various sewing-related topics such as:
- Verses about linens, cloths, and fabrics
- Verses about embroidery, thread, and needles
- Verses about clothing
So what does the bible say about sewing? Here is my list of sewing themed Bible quotes!

Ecclesiastes 3:7
This is probably my all time favorite bible verse about sewing, becuase it shares such simple but powerful wisdom that is actually applicable to ALL areas of life.
There is a time and a place for everything. As a seamstress I know for sure that there is a time for rending (tearing or destroying) and a time for building up and creating.
Sometimes I have to stop and unstitch everything I have sewn because it just wasn’t right. And that is okay!
Matthew 19:24
This is one of Jesus’ most interesting allegories. The image of a camel passing through the tiny eye of a sewing needle is amazing because it is just not possible!
Imagine what the people He was teaching must have thought when they heard those words… It’s hard enough to pass sewing thread through a needle!
This verse is powerful and important, which is why I included it so high on this list.
Genesis 3:7
This verse describes the account of Adam and Eve shortly after they ate the fruit. They realized their nakedness and sewed themselves aprons from fig leaves.
This is the first mention of sewing in the Bible, and one of the only times the item being sewn was a leaf, instead of some kind of fabric.
Proverbs 31:13
This verse and the two that follow are from a great passage in Proverbs chapter 31. The woman described in this verse goes out to find raw materials to work with, namely wool and flax. Then she uses them in some way that is virtuous.
I like that this Bible verse specifically describes that the woman worked willingly with her hands. Willingly can mean voluntarially, but it also means “of one’s own accord”. I like to think of this woman as being self motivated to work hard to create something good and beautiful with her hands and skills.
Proverbs 31:24
In this verse the woman who worketh with her hands has spun her materials to weave a fabric, and she then takes the linen she made and sold it.
By doing this, she has used her time and talents to be productive and industrious.
Proverbs 31:22
The last of the proverbs verses I will include in this list! In this verse, the woman has used her skills as a seamstress and perhaps even embroidery to create clothing for herself to wear.
Her clothing is described as being silk and purple, which was very fine and took skill to create! Purple cloth was rare and associated with royalty.
Mark 2:21
This verse is one of many different ways the same message was shared that Jesus came to do a new work that cannot fit into old ways/traditions. However, this time the teaching is told using the imagery of sewing a garment.
When sewing or mending a piece of clothing, you generally want to try to match the fabric that is already there as best as you can. You wouldn’t sew a new piece of fabric to patch an old worn garment, it would feel out of place.
Rather, you would use the nice new material to sew a whole new garment to wear.
Exodus 28:39
In this chapter, instruction is given on how Aaron and the priest’s clothing should be sewn and assembled.
The clothing is made from fine linens, and high quality workmanship. Each piece is symbolic of different things the Lord wanted them to remember as they served Him.
I think it is significant that they are to be made “for glory and for beauty”, because the beauty and symbolism in the sewn garments honored God.
Revelation 19:8
This verse is describing the Marriage of The Lamb. The bride was clothed in beautiful and specially prepared linens, which were clean and white. The whiteness of the fabric represets the righteous and good acts of the saints of the church.
Ezekiel 16:10
This Bible verse is using imagery of fine clothing to describe the prosperity and wealth of Jerusalem. Their clothing was sewn from very expensive and rare materials such as linen and silk. The garments were meticulously embroidered with beautiful patterns. They were blessed and looked beautiful, but became unfaithful to God.
Exodus 25:26
Moses asked all the people who were artisans of some kind to use their skills to make gifts for the Lord. In this verse, the women who had skill with fibers and cloth spun and made fabrics of different colors. The linens were made for the tabernacle.
