Teaching your kids to hand-sew doesn’t have to be spooky! This easy felt ghost finger puppet is so fun and approachable even for kids as young as 4-6.
Lately my girls have been asking me if we can sew together or “needle” together.
We came up with this easy project that they were able to complete and enjoy to make their own ghost puppet toys! They are super quick and simple. My 6 year old even added spiky teeth to hers.
Supplies Needed
- Two colors of felt, for the ghosts body and eyes/mouth
- Thread
- Hand sewing needles
- Sewing Scissors
- Pinking Shears
- A pencil or disappearing ink fabric marker
How To Sew A Ghost Finger Puppet
Step 1. Make The Body
Trace generously around your finger on a piece of felt to make an upside down “U” shape. Make sure the shape is wide enough that it will be able to fit your finger inside.
Cut it out, then use it to trace another so you have two “U” shapes. These will be the ghost’s body.
Step 2. Add The Eyes and Mouth
From your second color of felt, cut out three circle shapes to be the eyes and mouth. Position them on your ghosts front body piece.
Next, sew the eyes and mouth to the ghosts body however you want. I used a running stitch (which just goes up and down) around the perimeter of each circle. My daughters just sewed however they wanted.
Step 3. Sew The Body Together
Once the face it all sewn on, align the ghost’s front and back pieces and use your pinking shears to cut across the bottom of both pieces. This will give the ghost the “wiggly” shape on the bottom.
Now, with both pieces aligned together, sew up around the top curve of the ghosts near the edge. Leave the bottom edge open.
You can use a running stitch (which goes up from the back, and down through the front), or you can sew around the edge (down from the front, around the edge, and down from the front again), or a blanket stitch, etc.
Then you are done! Now you can put them on your fingers and try them out.
My girls loved this simple kids sewing project, they are always excited for a chance to use a real needle! Their ghosts turned out so cute for their first attempt!
