About The Scissor Practice Sheets
These worksheets are totally free for you to print and us as many times as you want. The printable comes with three sheets and each has a different cutting activity that will help your kids practice their fine motor skills and learn some foundational sewing skills along the way.
These sheets are intended for kids ages 3-8, and can also double as tracing sheets if you want to get creative that way!
Learn about each activity in the set below.
Line Cutting Practice
The first sheet is all about cutting along different shaped lines. There are several different line types on this sheet to cut on:
- A rectangle line that alternates up and down shapes
- A zig zag line
- A wave
- A straight line
The first time I introduce cutting to my kids, I don’t expect them to cut perfectly along the line. As long as they are going in the right direction, I can tell they at least understand the goal.
You can give them the same sheets over and over again for a period of time and you will begin to notice how they improve!
Fold & Cut Practice
The fold and cut practice sheet is a very fun way to practice folding your material, cutting on the fold, and opening the cut piece. (All of which are common tasks when sewing a garment.)
To do this activity, have the child fold the paper on the vertical line. Then they will cut on the dashed line through both layers of the paper.
Some kids might hold the paper up in the air to cut it. My child prefered to leave it on the table.
When they open up the design, it will be a heart!
The surprise at the end of this activity is a favorite, and your kids will be so excited to show you what they made.
Shapes and Cards
The shapes and cards sheet is a good way to practice cutting out different pattern pieces and shapes.
First, have your child cut out each of the four rectangle cards by cutting on the vertical and horizontal lines.
Then they can cut out the shapes from the middle of the cards. The different shapes will help them learn to maneuver the scissors around sharp edges, corners, and curves.

Conclusion
Giving the kids the chance to safely use scissors is a good way for them to refine their fine motor skills. They think it is a fun activity, and they get excited and proud when they do a good job!
My kids love to practice with scissors, and I can tell that the more they work on this skill, the better they get at following the lines closely.
Cutting straight lines and cutting along shapes is an essential sewing skill! Introduce these skills to your kids early in child-appropriate ways and soon they will be ready to start cutting and sewing their own projects!
