About The Sewing Cards

Recommended for kids ages 3-9. Make sure to supervise younger kids around long string.

Sewing cards (AKA lacing cards or threading cards) that you purchase come with a shoelace that is perfect for threading because of the plastic tip.

At home, we use a piece of yarn or ribbon with a piece of tape wrapped around the end!

Supplies & Materials Needed

  • Printed Sewing cards (See my printing recommendations below)
  • Scissors
  • Standard handheld office hole punch (1/4 inch hole size)
  • Yarn or ribbon with the ends taped about 1-2 inches (or you can use a real shoelace!)

To make sure your cards are reusable, they need to be made on sturdy paper. Here are some options:

    • Print them on cardstock and laminate them
    • Print them on regular paper and glue them to a thicker craft cardboard
    • Take the file to a print shop so they can laminate it for you

Whatever you use, make sure the material is sturdy, yet thin enough to punch holes through.

When printing the cards at home, I recommend selecting the “fit to printable area” option, just to make sure nothing gets cut off.

Cat & Mouse Sewing Card Instructions

Print and laminate the cards (or glue them on board) as described above.

Then, punch out the white holes with a handheld hole punch.

The holes fit a standard 1/4 inch hold puncher. (I had to use a heart shape one because my regular one is lost!)

Now your card is ready to play with!

You can tie a knot on one end of the string so it doesn’t slide through, or let them have the string loose so they can use both sides of it.
