Are you wondering where to buy fabric now that Joann’s is closing? Here is a huge list of places to buy fabric both in person (brick and mortar stores) and online!

Love it or hate it, Joann’s Fabrics closing means there is less places to touch and feel fabric in person before buying it! I know a lot of people online in sewing groups I am in are wondering where to find fabrics. Here is a list of places (in person options for those of you who like to touch and feel) and online options too.

Hope this helps! (If you know of more, or if you know of a local store in your area, please add it in a comment below!)

Brick & Mortar Fabric Stores

These physical locations are places you can buy fabric in person. This is great for those of us who have to TOUCH the fabric or see it in real life before making the plunge.

There are a LOT of fabric stores across the U.S. but most of them are not huge names like Joann or Hobby Lobby. Think local, and ask around for recommendations from those in your area.

Note that some of these places aren’t fabric stores. They are stores that also sell fabric! Get creative when looking for material.

Local Quilt Shops

In my small town, there are a couple local quilting shops that not only quilt, but also sell gorgeous cotton fabrics. Maybe there is one in your area too! Google “quilt shop near me”, or ask a community group on Facebook to see if anyone nearby knows of one!

Thrift Stores

One of my favorite places to get fabric is from thrift stores. Not only do they have a fabric selection, but you can also scour the linens section for bedding and linens to sew with!

Hobby Lobby

Hobby Lobby (as if you don’t know!) is a massive craft chain that has stores all over the country. I go there often for fabrics and more!

Walmart

Walmart’s fabric selection isn’t super extensive, but they do have some aisles of fabrics and notions to choose from in a pinch.

Michaels

Michaels and A.C. Moore (which was purchased by Michaels in some physical locations) has a sewing department, but the size can vary from store to store.

Facebook Marketplace

Don’t forget to check Facebook for new and vintage fabrics, usually for an amazing deal! I have had AMAZING luck when there is an estate sale when someone has passed away. I have been able to inherit a LOT of beautiful vintage fabrics this way.

Facebook “Buy Nothing” Groups

One of my readers left a great comment below saying: “Many towns have community Buy Nothing groups on Facebook. Like Freecycle, no money is allowed to change hands. Members ask for or offer items from and to the rest of the membership.”

I tried searching for a buy nothing group in my area and was able to find one! You might be able to, also. If no one is offering fabric, you might be able to make a post stating that you are in search of (ISO) fabric!

Craigslist

In my area Craigslist is somewhat less popular than Facebook Marketplace, but I still find good deals on items from time to time so it is worth checking. I am including this in the “in person” category because you still can go see the fabric in person when purchasing it!

Freecycle

Free cycle is an online platform where you list items for FREE that people can come get. I have given away garbage bags full of fabric on freecycle in the past. I’m listing it in the physical locations section because it is usually a local pickup situation, not shipped to your door.

Online Fabric Stores

These online stores are great options to buy fabric online and have it shipped to your door!

I haven’t purchased from every single of these stores myself, but I have seen them recommended in sewing groups online by people who have used them.

Plus, a lot of these have a physical location as well!

Etsy is a great marketplace to find small businesses and vintage fabrics. I have also purchased old quilts from sellers on Etsy that I used to repurpose into stockings!

  1. I’ve had success shopping at Cali Fabrics. Lots of designer headstock and great variety. Super service, good prices, and quick delivery too.

  2. Many towns have community Buy Nothing groups on Facebook. Like Freecycle, no money is allowed to change hands. Members ask for or offer items from and to the rest of the membership.
