Want to learn how to make sure your kitchen towels never slip off the oven handle again? These are SO easy and totally toddler (or cat) proof
I’ve made several kinds of hanging kitchen towels with buttons, snaps, and with cute tie tops, but this one takes the CAKE for ease, customization, and toddler-proof-ness. (Trust me, my toddler tried!)
I got the idea for these from my friend, and I knew I had to try it!
These also make a good gift idea and all you need is towels. Let’s sew!

Supplies Needed
- Dish Towel to alter
- Basic sewing supplies
- Serger (optional, you can use a zig zag stitch too.)
How To Make A Slip Proof Towel
Step 1. Prepare Your Towel
The secret to this hanging towel is adding a slit to your towel near the edge, that allows you to tuck the “tail” through it. It loops around the oven handle nice and tight!
You can make this slit in several different ways, depending on how you like to hang your towels.
- You can make it on the corner of your towel, perpendicular to the corner so that the towel hangs from the corner for a draped look (great for square towels)
- You can fold the towel into thirds and make the slit in the middle (this is how my friend does it, and it looks really good. Great for big towels)
- You can fold the towel in half, and make the slit in the middle (great for long or skinny towels like mine)
- For super skinny towels, you can not fold it at all, but make the slit in the center.
My towel was small so I decided to fold it in half once lengthwise.

Next, measure in 1.5 inches from the bottom edge, and from both sides and cut a slit (only through the top layer, if you are doing a folded towel.)

Step 2. Finish The Raw Edges
Now technically you don’t have to finish the raw edges of the slit you made, but it will fray. My friend says “these are toddler towels” so she doesn’t care if she has to snip the frays.
For a professional look, I serged the edges. You can do a zig zag stitch. Backstitch the beginning and end.

Bada-boom now you’re done!
Now I will show you how to hang it.
Step 3. Hang The Towel
The way I like to hang the towel is to place the towel on the bar/oven handle with the slit facing down, over the back. Then, pull the front of the toel down through the slit, and pull it through.

When you pull it through it looks nice and tidy!

My 2 year old pulled that thing with all his might. It would not budge. Yay!
