Pillowcase with two bow tie closures on the side

See how I transformed a too-big pillowcase into a cute farmhouse style pillowcase with ties on the side!

I loved the pattern on these king sized pillowcases, but since we use regular sized pillows I thought it would be a great idea to hem the pillowcases and use the extra material to make little ties on the sides!

You can also make these pillowcases from scratch, or just add complimentary ties to existing pillowcases, it’s up to you! In this tutorial, I will show you how I hemmed mine.

Supplies Needed

  • A too – large pillowcase to hem (or you can make an entirely new pillowcase from scratch, you will need a yard of fabric for each pillowcase including the ties for a standard 20×26 pillow!)
  • Matching Thread (I like that there are so many options here
  • Sewing Pins, fabric scissors, sewing machine, etc.

How To Make A Pillowcase With Ties

Step 1. Hem The Pillowcase

First you are going to hem the king sized pillowcase into a standard size.

A king sized pillowcase is 36 inches long, and a standard is only 26 inches long.

I left an extra inch and a half of fabric to fold and hem, which means I cut off enough fabric so that the pillowcase would be 27.5 inches wide.

After trimming the pillowcase, fold over the raw edge 3/4 inch, and then 3/4 inch again and pin it in place all around.

Step 2. Make The Ties

Next you are going to use the extra fabric to make the ties. I chose to make two sets of ties for each pillow, a top tie and a bottom tie.

Each set of ties will need two straps of fabric, 4″ by 20″ each.

cut out the ties for the pillowcases

Fold the two long edges of each strip into the center, then fold it in half to hide the raw edges inside.

Then pin the ties to hold it together, and sew down the open edge to close it. Backstitch at the beginning and end.

If you want to finish one end of each strap so it doesn’t fray, you can fold it over a half inch, and a half inch again and sew it down.

Step 3. Attach the ties to the pillowcase.

Lay the pillowcase on the floor and determine where you want the ties to be attached. Place the end of each tie on the wrong side of the pillowcase about 3/4 inch, and pin it in place.

Then, sew the ties to the pillowcase by stitching back and forth over the tie.

Now your pillowcase is complete!

All that’s left to do is to put your pillow back inside and tie the ties into bows.

I love how this turned out, it is pretty but also very practical since it helps the pillows not fall out of the cases.

I think I might add ties to more of my pillowcases, and for those pillowcases that don’t have excess fabric, a contrasting or complimentary fabric would make cute ties too.

I hope you liked this super simple tutorial, let me know if you have any questions!
