Our church recently held a service project where we provided meals and gifts for the elderly for the holidays. On the “gift list” was rice heating packs. I was able to make these four packs to donate, and my kids even helped fill them with rice!
These packs are SO easy, and the perfect size to hold about a pound of rice. You can make them bigger or smaller if you wish, but this size also conveniently fits into a glass to hold it up while you fill it.
Supplies Needed
- 12”x8” piece of cotton fabric, light/medium weight.
- Matching Thread
- Sewing Pins
- 1 lb of rice
How To Make A Reusable Rice Heating Pack
Step 1. Sew The Bag
Cut out a piece of fabric to 12”x8” in size.
(I had this beautiful Christmas cotton from my grandma’s stash. Isn’t it perfect!)
Fold the fabric in half with right sides together, so that when folded it is 4”x12”.
Pin the side and bottom of the bag, then sew or serge down the long side and bottom edges. Leave the top edge open.
Step 2. Fill The Bag
Turn the bag right side out, and make sure the bottom corners are pushed out too.
Place the bag into a tall glass, then fill the bag with rice. You can use a funnel, or cut a small hole in the rice bag and carefully pour it in.
You want to fill the bag until it has about 3 inches of space left on top.
Step 3. Sew The Bag Closed
With the bag still standing upright, fold top top edge down into the center, about an inch. Pin the top closed.
Then, right under the pinned top, place pins as low as you can horizontally to hold the rice down. This will help prevent it from coming near the needle.
Now, sew the top edge closed with a straight stitch about ½ an inch from the edge.
Remove the pins, and you are done!
You can tie on a tag with a string to make it look cute.

Hi Vickie! The label tag is in the blog post, it is an image that you can right click and save to your computer and then print it out at whatever size you want!
What is the setting on your sewing machine for the stitching on the inside
Hi Gelana, i just used the default stitching, a straight stitch with regular length. If you do a long stitch the rice could pop out.
